First Day Predictions

Published by Adam Schneider/RunnerSpace.com/college editor on June 10, 2015

The meet is starting out with no surprises.

Women's Heptathlon - Akela Jones of Kansas State has been an athlete that experts have wanted to watch and in the first event she crushed her season best. She ran 13.10 for the 100m hurdles (13.38 season best) and at this time I will predict that she will win the Heptathlon and Mississippi State's Erica Bougard will finish second and Georgia's Kendell Williams third.

Men's Decathlon - Even though Dakota Keys is at home I don't think that the crowd will help Dakota with an ailing back.  I think list leaders Maicel Uibo (8326) will beat his teammate at Georgia, Garrett Scantling (8232 season best).

Men's Hammer Throw 1:30 PM - Conor McCullough of USC will dominate the competition and could make the World Championships qualifying mark of 78m.  His season has been set up to start peaking at this point in the season.

Men's Pole Vault 4:00 PM - Akron's Shawn Barber has cleared 19 feet 16 times this year and did it ten times indoors. There are a combined nine clearances by all other collegians combined.  He is my favorite for the Bowerman award and he will actually have some good competition for the most of the heights as Tennessee's Jake Blankenship has also cleared 19 feet.  We could see a meet record (5.86m by Lawrence Johnson in 1996) and collegiate record (5.98m by Lawrence Johnson in 1996) and possibly an attempt at 6.00m.

Men's 10,000m 6:43 PM - Oregon could solidify it's men's team chances with an expected high score in this event.  Edward Cheserek is expected to repeat and NCAA cross country runner-up Eric Jenkins is predicted to go second.  Jenkins passed Futsum Zienasellassie of Northern Arizona at the finish and Futsum will attempt to return the favor and more if he can.

Men's Javelin Throw 5:00 PM - This could be an amazing competition.  At the SEC meet there were three throwers over 250'.  Texas A&M freshman Ioannis Kyriazis won the SEC and has not lost to a collegian thower his last five competitions and has only thrown under 75.47m once.  He will look to throw further than his Greek junior record with the 700g javelin (78.41mmat a bit over 78m.  He has beaten all but John Ampomah of Eastern Michigan (list leader at 81.55, 267-7) but he hasn't faced him and like Ampomah both have only two meets over 250'.

Men's Long Jump 5:15 PM - Florida's Marquis Dendy has been fantastic and could potentially crack the 27'.  His team points are essential for Florida's team aspirations.  Arkansas's Jarrion Lawson could crack the 27' barrier as he did in last year's NCAA indoor meet and he is essential for the Razorbacks' team hopes.

Men's Shot Put 5:30 PM -  Ryan Crouser of Texas should repeat as NCAA champion and challenge the 70' barrier in front of his home state crowd.  Stipe Zunic of Florida will attempt to knock off Crouser as he did indoors and gain valuable team points.  Crouser may be upset if he, as it is rumored, is focusing more on his Discus technique which is enough different to cause an affect to his shot technique. He is also noticibly smaller than last year.  Darrell Hill of Penn State (68-5 1/4) and Johnathan Jones of Buffalo (67-11) are are second and third on the national lists and their steady rise the last few years make them a threat to win.
