When a program has won 23 national championships, and had athletes set world records and take home countless all-America honors, finding a way to document that success in an office requires more than a simple trophy case in a corner of the room.

That was the challenge facing the Oregon track and field program when its offices were renovated over the last year. The end result was so striking, it’s being considered for a design award.

Under the direction of UO head coach Robert Johnson and local firm AHM Brands, the UO track and field offices now tell the story of the program’s vast history, from Dan Kelly’s world record in the 100-yard dash back in 1906 to the recent history set by the likes of Galen Rupp, Ashton Eaton and Brianne Thiesen. The suite is part working office, part walk-in trophy case, featuring not only the program’s 23 national titles but lists on the walls of school and world record-holders, all-Americans, national champions and Olympians.

“I wanted to do something in a bold and bodacious way,” Johnson said. “… The ‘wow’ factor is definitely over the top. We’re really proud. It makes our coaching staff want to be here, want to be in the office, want to be around the vibe and the newness, the freshness of it.”

The renovated Oregon track and field suite is one of 40 finalists globally for the Shaw Contract Group “Design Is …” Award. Among the other finalists are football facilities for Iowa State University and the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, as well as major companies such as DirecTV and Expedia.
