Michel, DeJarnette Lead Ducks at Sunriver

SUNRIVER, Ore. – Claire Michel led the Duck women’s cross country team to a season-opening victory over Gonzaga, while Ben DeJarnette was the winner of the men’s race as Oregon kicked off the 2011 season Friday at the Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort.
“Tonight was a fabulous way to start the season,” said Oregon Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. “Great weather, great crowd and pretty good races.”
Michel’s win highlighted the women’s 15-50 win. The senior from Clackamas, Ore., covered the 5,000 meter course in 16:45.1. Her Oregon teammates claimed the next five spots as the Oregon runners controlled the race from the first lap.
“I ran here before as a freshman so the coaches told me to take the team through the course,” said Michel. “We did a real nice job of working together and supporting each other.”
Senior Bronwyn Crossman was right behind Michel in 16:45.4, with junior Sarah Penney third in 16:45.8, sophomore Lanie Thompson fourth in 16:46.1, freshman Megan Patrignelli fifth in 17:00.6 and junior Taylor Wallace sixth in 17:04.9.
In the men’s race, DeJarnette had to cover an early move by Gonzaga’s Willie Milam, who took a large lead after the first lap. The sophomore from Mechanicsville, Va., drew even with Milam over the second and third miles and then pulled away on the last lap. DeJarnette won the four-mile race in 19:39.5.
“It was a little harder than I expected because (Milan) made that move early and I had to fight to stay with him,” said DeJarnette. “I was glad I had enough left on the final lap.”
Milam took second in 19:49.7 as the Bulldogs placed seven runners in the top 10 to win the team competition 26-33.
Other highlights for the men included sophomore Mitchell Hunt in fourth at 20:06.9 and freshman Cole Watson fifth in 20:08.6.
The Ducks will continue training in Sunriver for two more weeks before returning to home to host the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Oct. 1.
