Australian indoor 1,500-meter record holder and Nike professional Jessica Hull, a four-time NCAA Division 1 champion and seven-time All-American at Oregon, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal from her home in Australia one year out from the scheduled start of the track and field program at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics to discuss running the fastest time on Australian soil in the women's 3,000 meters by clocking 8:41.80 on July 26 at the Bankstown Winter Distance meet at The Crest Athletics Track in New South Wales. Hull revisits her first race in nearly five months and what it meant not only to compete in a driving rainstorm, but also to win the Steigen Virtual World 3K Challenge and help fellow Australians Chloe Tighe and Rose Davies run under 9 minutes, in addition to competing against rising 13-year-old talent Sarah Baker. Hull also reflects on the pacing efforts of Jesse Maxwell and Luke Young to help her run a personal best, which would rank No. 3 all-time in Australia and No. 4 in the world this year. She also speaks about how invaluable the efforts of her coach Pete Julian corresponding from Portland, along with the efforts of her father and several training partners in Australia have been in allowing her to continue to accomplish workouts during the Coronavirus pandemic. Hull shares her relief to have won the 5,000 meters Feb. 6 at the Melbourne Track Classic to secure her berth to compete in the Tokyo Olympics next year, along with her reaction to the July 10 performances in the 5,000 of Americans and Bowerman Track Club teammates Shelby Houlihan and Karissa Schweizer at the Portland Intrasquad meet. She also examines the possibility of the World Cross Country Championships, scheduled for March 2021 in New South Wales, to be postponed or rescheduled as a result of the pandemic due to the recent suggestion by Australian Athletics. Hull also expresses the gratitude she has for upcoming opportunities to race against elite fields in the 1,500 and 5,000 in Europe in August, and her excitement to reunite with members of Julian's training group Shannon Rowbury, Konstanze Klosterhalfen, Donavan Brazier and Craig Engels for the first time in more than five months. Hull shares how meaningful her time has been with family and friends during the pandemic, and how she is mentally preparing to approach a 14-day quarantine in an Australian hotel once she returns to her home country following competition in Europe.
